Okay, not really a hack actually, but I wasn’t sure what to call this.
My son’s little Ikea play kitchen is well loved and used daily, we keep it in our (tiny) living room tucked in the corner. Now that it’s the holidays, our tree will be set up in that corner and I have to rearrange everything to squeak it in… the play kitchen gets moved to our dining room, our piano gets wedged to the right, pushed right against the couch and the tree barely fits in the corner between the window and piano. I prefer to have it in that corner with a few sides hidden from curious fingers lol. I have no idea how this year will go with a baby and toddler.
I opened it up a bit by removing the top part of the kitchen.
My son didn’t use that part much anyways to be honest. We have a little microwave for him that he uses to ‘make coffee’ and what not so the top part ended up being storage. Making this little change definitely kept the space feeling open and airy, then, the other morning I gave the kitchen a few coats of white paint.
I love how fresh and bright this little DIY turned out – my son loves it too! He is so excited about the little makeover and said he has a new kitchen (boy after my own DIY heart hah).
So while this isn’t a DIY or make over (more like a make under?),
I wanted to share because this is a great temporary solution if you have a small space like I do but want it to feel bright and spacious.
The little top is in our storage downstairs, and I’m kind of loving the cute mini kitchen. I might keep it like this for a while. 🙂

To remove the top you must also remove the counter top. You un screw the at the kitchen ends, then you lay to top with counter top attached on its side, then you can un screw the counter top to separate from the top. You will need a small Alan key not a screw driver.
I just unscrewed it and left it as is actually, super easy!
How did you remove the top section of the play kitchen?
Such a cute makeover, love the new modern look of the kitchen. It fits in your living room perfectly. Pinned! Thanks for sharing at the Creative Circle link party!
