Front Door Makeover

Um, wow this little space was looking pretty neglected and sad. I loved the pink door so much when I first painted it but, it’s been pink for a few years and I needed a change. I honestly haven’t done a thing with it since Christmas so a quick spruce up was necessary! Here’s the before:

Painting the door something new has been on my to do list for the past 2 months. It’s impossible for me to get my ducks in a row and actually complete projects (or start them even) anymore, but the stars aligned (aka the baby was napping and the kids were playing nicely together on the front lawn lol) so I quickly taped off the hardware and grabbed some paint I had from a leftover project.

Painting tips: do as I say, not as I do

This is Tricorn Black by Behr, in a matte exterior paint (I don’t know if this is an appropriate paint for a front door but it’s what we went with. Also I feel like you should sand the front door and properly prep it before painting… tbh I never did that when I painted it pink the first time and there was no chipping or anything, especially in our harsh climate so I didn’t do it this time either lol)

Honestly, the first coat had me scared, it looked horrendous, the paint wasn’t covering nicely and you could see every single brush stroke. Plus there was a thunderstorm coming in hot! In the end I did three coats of paint. With the wind it dried quickly so I was able to get all three on in no time at all lol. It looks great and I really do love the change!

The muted pink was so pretty but I’ve had that colour on my door for a few years now and was craving something a little moodier and with more contrast. I want to stain the small porch area at some point, but for now I added a plant and a new wreath to complete it!

One more before and after:

Okay but I’m obsessed. I know it’s just a door but I love the colour with our white/wood steps and then the olive branch wreath. It’s just a nice change from what I had!

  1. Hi Megan – Just curious, did you paint both the inside & outside of your door the dark brown color?
