Our Morning Routine

A little backstory, my husband and I have two kids and one on the way. He works in the oilfield and is often away for weeks at a time so I solo parent a-LOT. Prior to the pandemic, I had a great little routine with the kids, and then 2020 happened and we slothed our way through that year. Now I’m trying to get the kids back into a daily routine of sorts but… it’s hard when we’re back in a lockdown and there isn’t much available in the way of excursions or kids activities. Anyways, our morning routine varies a lot but I thought it would be fun to take you along with us today!

We used to love to explore fun places in our little city (the dino museum, neat little restaurants, places like that 🙂 ) Anyways, we’re doing the best we can and our days are quite a bit busier now that the kids are a little older and in school twice a week. I thought it would be fun to take you with us this morning though – it varies so much day to day but this is today!

6:15 am ish

I’m awake but exhausted tbh lol. My son is an early riser and always has been so I can hear him wake up around 6am pretty much every single morning. I have been having terrible sleeps while pregnant (I’m a back sleeper and can’t sleep on my back anymore being 7 months along so the struggle is real hah). Anyways, I lay in bed chilling out for 20 more minutes or so, my son usually plays Legos in his room by himself when he wakes up.

Mary Poppins the cat is v needy, as soon as my eyes open she can sense it and jumps up on me, walking over me, meowing, sitting beside my head, on me… staring at me like an inch from my face. We actually adopted her almost a full year ago, it was early April and she’s an absolute sweetie pie. Anyways, she wants to be fed and follows me around when I get up and am walking around the bedroom, literally tripping me in the process of me getting her her breakfast. (Her food dish is in our room because we have kid and it’s just easier to not have them messing around with the bowls).

after feeding Mary Poppins, I put on a face mask. I’ve been trying to do this twice a week and take better care of my skin.

6:45 am ish

I get my son his breakfast, start some oatmeal for my daughter (her current fave) and get my coffee. We have pretty relaxed mornings.

7:00 am ish

my daughter wakes up, we have some snuggles first and then she goes to eat her blueberry oatmeal. While the kids are settled with breakfast, I sit on the couch and enjoy my coffee, scrolling IG or checking my emails.

the kids play after they’re done eating, usually Lego’s together or some cute made up game they invent.

8:00 am ish

I make myself breakfast – this morning it was a fried egg on a toasted sourdough english muffin with a slice of cheese. One of my weird pregnancy cravings has been cold milk (I don’t normally drink milk so it’s weird for me lol), so I had a glass of milk with my breakfast as well along with some OJ. While I’m eating I’ll go on Instagram and work on replying to dm’s and comments while I eat.

8:30 am ish

time to get ready and it takes a ridiculously long time to wrangle the kids and get them ready to go out the door. We had a hockey practice today. I get their clothes out if they’re playing or they pick out what they’re wearing, it doesn’t matter to me! Once they’re dressed, I brush their teeth and wash faces. It takes about 45 minutes on a good day lol – they play in between, get distracted, goof off – all the things kids do at this age lol. They *could* be faster (on school days we’re super efficient) but slower mornings we take our time a bit.

Once they’re ready, I have them help tidy up the mess. It’s usually a bunch of pillows, blankets, dolls, dinosaurs – literally a mix of everything they were playing with in the morning. They like to drag a bunch of stuff out and play camping or make tents. I put on a cartoon for them to watch so I could run upstairs and easily get ready.

9:30 am ish

Now we’re on the verge of being late so I’m sheep dogging the kids down to the front door. Literally lol. We take about 15 minutes to get the hockey gear on. I make a quick iced coffee to go (just cold brew poured over ice, splash of cream and some vanilla syrup). A few snacks are packed up as well and then we’re out the door!

9:45 am ish

off to hockey practice! Surprisingly not late *yay!*

10:15 am

at hockey practice for the next 45 minutes.

11:15 am ish

we went to get some groceries and then popped into the post office to mail a package that’s been sitting in the back of my vehicle for a week lol.

noon ish

we’re back home and it’s lunch time! Today I made the kids peanut butter and honey sandwiches (cut into 4 with the crusts cut off), a small glass of milk and they had a frozen yogurt tube for a treat. I also baked these pretzles I found at the grocery store (they were not great, the kid’s enjoyed them though). I made myself a snack plate with some veggies and dip, cheese, crackers and hummus.

Side note – this chocolate hummus is AMAZING (I should note this isn’t what I ate with my veggies lol, I had a normal hummus with lunch). It’s in the deli section at our Safeway so give it a try if you find it. It tastes exactly like brownie batter!

Anyways, that’s our morning/early afternoon ♥ Let me know if you like these little pockets of our daily routine. It was fun to put this all down and photograph our morning! I can do a school morning or our afternoon/evening routine if you like 🙂
