Accent Wall in the Primary Bedroom & Mini Tour!

When I moved into this home, the entirety of it was painted a matte, light-sucking taupe colour. There were a few walls ‘accented’ in a darker matte brown as well. It was… a choice lol. This home was built in 2008, and that was definitely the aesthetic. The first thing I did when moving in was give the entire main floor a few coats of white paint to update it. I knew I would be adding wallpaper to the girl’s rooms, as well as painting some of my room so I left a few walls as is and circled back to them after I unpacked everything. I don’t know if accent walls are a thing (it seems like they aren’t anymore) but I feel like you should do whatever the hell you want in your home, and it should reflect your taste and aesthetic whether it’s trendy or not. So black accent wall it is!

This was a free project actually.

I used some leftover paint I had, which happened to be Tricorn Black (this was in a flat sheen I believe as well. So it really wouldn’t work in a high traffic area fyi. Anytime something was to brush anything against it, a smudge mark will show. So IF you are choosing a darker paint colour in a busier area of your home, I would recommend a satin sheen.)

This is the before of the space:

And here is the after:

What do you think? I think it turned out great and the bedroom is still bright and full of light but the dark accent wall adds some much needed depth.

The one thing I wish I did,

is that I had painted the baseboards on this wall. I might go back and paint those black at some point, but honestly this was a really quick project. I wanted to feel like I could ‘move into’ my room and getting the wall painted was one of the last steps so it felt finished. Like I mentioned, there was a lot that needed to be done in this home (all aesthetic, but still). I wanted to make it feel like home and the kids rooms were number one.

If you are recently divorced and have moved into a new home with your kids, you get it. They’re so displaced and have so much on their plates already, having a cozy room where everything is unpacked and it feels like home for them is priority number one. My room was next, and then all the little things that I’ve shared on my Instagram (there’s a ‘home‘ highlight with all the story updates I’ve posted).

These black sconces I found were around $20 each from Ikea, I love them. I linked similar dupes for you (these are ones I have in my dining room).

I get a lot of questions about my bedding. It’s from a mix of different places, but if you’re looking for really cute patterns or fun prints, I would recommend Kip&Co, Envello, Piglet in Bed, Brooklinen, or I’ll check out HomeSense and I can sometimes find some cute patterns that are pretty affordable too.

I found a dupe for this cozy checkered blanket! I bought it from HomeSense and every time I share it on my social media I’m asked about it. It’s also under $20!

Some favourites in this room…

I bought this cute arched shelf for the corner. I like to have shelves and nooks to display personal things, photos and some greenery. It’s a great price too!

The dresser is (I believe no longer available) from Article, I’ve had it for a few years at this point. I’ll share all the sources that I’m able to below for you.

As for linens, I have a couple things I was able to bring to this house but I’m on the hunt for some cute sheets and duvet covers. I really like adding a fun print and some colour this way so if you know any great brands you want to share, leave in the comments!
