A quick share about our catch-all drawer here in the kitchen (aka The Junk Drawer). This is the drawer in our house to hold pens, scissors, tape, paper, toothpicks, rogue coupons and lists, oven mitts, etc, etc, etc. Just all the things that need to somewhat be close at hand but don’t have a definitive space, they all end up in this drawer. I haven’t organized it since we moved in last year and it’s turned into a dump zone.
While lunch was cooking, I took a few minutes and cleaned it right up!
First, I emptied the whole drawer, gave it a good wipe, and quickly took stock of the different categories:
- pens and scissors/sharp objects
- tape, chalk
- notepad/menu
- oven mitts (don’t really belong but it’s nice and close to the oven)
- toothpicks, elastics, bbq lighter, gum
I grabbed a few larger bins (repurposed the box our new Ipad came in – the white boxes at the front) and set the trays in to maximize space. Then placed the items where they fit best. The oven mitts lay on top on the right and everything else fits perfectly in the bins. There were a few items I put away that didn’t need to be in there (random things that the drawer collected).
I love how a few minutes of organizing can make me feel so accomplished haha. Plus now this drawer isn’t a pain to dig through – everything has a place 🙂
