I built our living room shelves shortly after moving into this house (they were very simple to build, I’ll make a post detailing them soon!). I’ve had so much fun styling them though, I love having little nooks like this to add in personality and layers to a room. I’m by no means a styling expert and it takes a lot of trial and error. In fact, if you scroll waaaay back in my Instagram and check out my early posts, you can have a good laugh at my styling lol. We all start from somewhere 😉
Anyways, I usually spend a little time when styling shelves,
it takes some trial and error to get it looking right, imo. I’m not big on vibrant colours, and like to keep things fairly neutral and minimal. I chose whites, greens, browns and oranges. I love mixing in plants on my shelves (plants give any space l i f e) and used a few faux plants and a couple of real plants as well.
I built my shelves to go up quite high, so at the top shelf I added a pop of green with two fake succulents. I had one trail down to give a little interest and then left my next shelf quite simple, to give it a little air to breath. I love these glass jars with a cork top, they’re so cute and I snagged them for only $1 each!
A few books turned backwards added some texture to the next shelf. These are actually Game of Thrones books LOL. If you don’t find you have any ‘pretty’ books, just turn them around! I also flipped the front cover back so that the cover wasn’t showing, just the first page.
To keep things looking balanced…
I don’t put similar things right underneath each other – so if there is a plant on the left side of a shelf, then I’ll add one to the right side below it. Also grouping items in three’s always looks nicer.
I still want to switch out the print in the bottom frame and possibly add another frame to one of the top shelves, but tbh I’m not sure when I’ll get around to that LOL.
