homemade hot cocoa (that is secretly healthy-ish)

… I mean, if you’re not including the mountain of whipping cream on the top 🙂

On one chilly afternoon during our visit to Calgary, Bear was napping and I was feeling like something sweet.  I gathered up a few items and whipped up this super tasty and good for you hot cocoa drink.  It was so chocolate-y and delicious, I had to share it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp raw cacao powder (different from cocoa powder, since it isn’t processed and is actually good for you & full of flavonoids – but cocoa powder will also work just fine, they basically taste the same)
  • scant 1 tb maple syrup
  • 12 oz milk (we had whole milk on hand)
  • pinch sea salt
  • whipped cream *optional* (but is it ever really? 🙂

Directions:

  1. Add everything except the whipped cream to a saucepan, whisking together until it is almost boiling.  Remove from the heat and pour into a mug.  Top with fresh whipping cream.  Enjoy!
