A White Shag Rug In The Living Room (With A Baby & Toddler)

When I sold our grey rug last year and bought this pretty white area rug, my husband was a little bit nervous having white on our main level with the kids. (I was more nervous about him than I was about the kids tbh, the man is a spill magnet lol!).  I totally understand the hesitation with small children and a little dog, but I think it’s important to choose things you love in your home, and to go with your gut when picking our home decor.  We chose a dark grey rug the first time because it was the ‘safe’ decision… and I hated it haha.  It made the whole main level feel dark and flat (we also have a dark grey couch).  I coveted this white rug from the start so I decided to just go with it (you can read about my post where I shared this here).

I shared my easy DIY in that post for trying out decor in a space (I use picmonkey to make a mock up of the room) and knew that this rug would brighten up this space and give it that warm, cozy feel I was craving.

So, how has it been living with a white rug?

It’s been great!  I loved it as soon as I unrolled it, plus this particular rug is so dang fluffy!  It’s much softer than our previous rug and that has been perfect for all the play time we have on it.

I’ve noticed that the spots we walk on the most (around the couch) are a touch darker from use.  I think I’ll use a steam cleaner to clean it up a bit at some point.  As far as stains or getting it dirty though, I haven’t had any issues with that.  My husband and I have spilt coffee on this rug once or twice, and it cleans up beautifully with a little soap and water.  The kids don’t eat on this rug aside from the odd cheerio/goldfish snack, so that’s not a problem (although I do find ground up cheerios in our rug every now and then lol).

What about vacuuming?

Since this is a shag rug, it takes a little more finesse to vacuum it properly.  We have a Dyson, which I’m obsessed with.  I run it over small sections 2-3 times to get down to all the fibers, just doing a quick vacuum won’t get any bits that are deep in the carpet.  So it takes a tiny bit longer to vacuum it properly but that doesn’t bother me, personally.

I say if you are thinking about getting a white rug but are worried about the wear and tear,

just go for it!  Home decor should reflect your style and make you feel happy.  I love our main level now, and despite a few (many) updates and refreshes to get us to this point, I’m so happy with how this room turned out.

Thanks for stopping by!
