I haven’t shared my bedroom since I first painted the black accent wall in here! (Here’s a fun before and after from when I moved in!) I still love it and will always be here for a black wall moment. I did the same thing in one of my old homes as well! The other day I had the itch to rearrange my entire home, so I started small with my bedroom and moved everythinggg around. This is my version of spring cleaning I think? I like to rearrange furniture, shop my home and move my plants and decor around, and while I’m doing this everything gets a deep clean as well! It’s sort of like playing irl Sims a bit. Who else is really into interior decor as an adult who played that game when they were younger and just built homes the entire time?? Lol!
I’m sharing some of the really easy, attainable and affordable ways I created an extra cozy bedroom for myself. I absolutely love living in this home, and that it’s all mine. I’ve never had an issue decorating in my previous homes while married, mind you, my ex-husband had zero issues with me moving things around all the time, but there’s something about this space being owned by me and I can make my bedroom for just me.
Tip No 1: Curtains!
1. The first thing, and I think this is a pretty typical tip – however, it’s super important nonetheless! Hang some curtains up! They frame the windows beautifully and really soften a room. I’ve had these curtains for a few years now (they were custom for a previous home and the sizing still works in this house!) I have some similar curtains linked below for you, some of my favourites.
Add in a few panels to give it a full look (I went back and hung up one extra on each side after taking these photos). Lastly, make sure to hang your curtains high and wide. This will make your windows feel larger and more spacious.
Tip No 2: Add texture!
2. Mix and match textures and colours. I keep things pretty neutral tbh, I’ve tried to add punches of colour, but my fall back is always a more neutral palette. I did find this beautiful striped pillow that I’m obsessed with. I ordered a second one and then this red/pink striped one as well. The bedding I’ve had for years at this point. It’s all linen and has gotten so soft after having it for so long. I have a queen sized bed, and my duvet and insert is king size, so it hangs nicely over the edges and gives a little more ‘blanket room’ when sleeping.
Tip No 3: Reduce visual clutter!
3. Choose furniture with storage and hidden power bars, like my console table that moonlights as my nightstand. I really love the colour and rattan detail on this piece. I really love that there is a hidden built in power station bar, so I can charge my phone easily and plug in all the random things like my lamp and speaker.
It’s such a versatile piece too, I wanted it to be used as a nightstand, but it could easily double as a large scale side table in a living room, or as an actual console table (the front entry would be perfect for this, or in a dining room). I like to rearrange all the time, so something like this is perfect and I can mix and match throughout my home.
Tip No 4: Add personality!
4. Paint a bold colour or add wallpaper. I obviously love white walls, my whole home has them, but sometimes in a bedroom like this, it gives the coziest vibe with a darker wall colour. You can see the original wall colour here, and the difference after I painted it all up! I’ve always loved a black accent wall and painted this wall with some leftover black paint I had right after I moved in. I think eventually I’ll wallpaper this room to add a bit more personality to it (I also love wallpapering, my previous homes can testify to that haha).
Tip No 5: Details, details, details!
5. Lastly, add in some pretty touches like hanging a plant from the ceiling, family photos – like this polaroid frame DIY that I shared a while back. I’m obsessed with it! I also love hanging a disco ball in the window for really pretty afternoon sparkles and adding some stacked books and cute lamps. The details are what pull a space together and make it feel cozy and like a home.
Let me know which tip is your favourite, or what you would include as cozy-maker must haves!
xx Megan
