Now that everything in our province is opening up and slowly going back to normal, we’re able to have family come visit! I’ve been slowly working on our guest bedroom for when family stays with us (we finished our basement earlier this year *yay!*). My in laws were here last week to visit the new baby, and my sister stayed with us for a few days after that as well!
Our guest room is still pretty simple, it will be one of the last rooms I finish up in our basement tbh (the main living room and more frequently used spaces are where my focus has been). That doesn’t mean you can’t easily make a guest room comfortable and cozy for guests though! I have a few key staples I like to include that just give that extra touch.
^ this is our bedroom (I don’t have our guest bedroom photo ready *just* yet) but I’ve incorporated my must-haves for a guest bedroom in this room too! Peep the cozy pile of bedding, that is a definite MUST. See if you can spy my other 4 must-haves!
I partnered with Walmart US to share some of my favourite things to include when getting our guest room visitor ready. Walmart has a great line of Wow & Now items . There are all kinds of cute decor, storage essentials, bedding, etc and Walmart adds in new products often. Make sure to check it out because once the items are gone, they’re gone!
Small changes can make a big impact in your home!
I pulled a few things from Walmart’s Wow & Now section to create a fun design board that would make a great guest room space! You don’t need a huge budget or a big makeover to create a cute and comfortable space for guests and family – just a few key elements and you’ll have a great space for people to crash in. Everything in this mood board is from Walmart Home and it’s all affordable and absolutely gorg! I love the minimal, natural boho feel here, this is definitely my style and inspo for the guest room in our home. I have everything linked below for you!
1 // First things first, let’s get the cozy textiles in order.
The guest room in our house has hands down the comfiest mattress, it’s like sleeping on a cloud! I have a fluffy comforter wrapped in a soft duvet and then I just toss on a few cute throw pillows and make sure there’s an additional soft blanket tucked at the end. I like to make sure there’s enough warm blankets just because the room is down in our basement and can get chilly at night. A cute way to store them is in a large basket by the bed or hung on a blanket ladder.

2 // Accent lighting ? Yes please!
Overhead lighting is fine and everything but I love me some good accent lighting. At nighttime I’ll forgo our main lights and stick to turning on a few lamps and having that cozy, soft glow throughout the house. A guest room is no different. a bedside lamp is a must (this one is super cute). Installing a sconce or two above the bed is a great way to save space and include some softer accent lighting as well.
3 // My bedroom must-have for good sleep are…
some good black out shades! In every bedroom in our home I installed black out blinds (plus the kids have an extra layer with black out curtains over top). We have a lot of natural light in our home and during summertime in Alberta, the sun rises at like 4:30am and sets around 11:30pm-ish. Sooo black out blinds are a must just to have a good sleep! Our guest room is a literal cave and it’s perfect for getting some quality shut eye.
4 // Mix decor with function…
I always like to have a small dresser or bench in a guest room. There needs to be somewhere for guests to put their luggage and their things. I don’t have anything fancy in our guest room, just a cute upholstered bench at the end of the bed.
Tossing in some cute throw pillows for a splash of colour and texture is always an easy way to add a little personality to a room while making the bed soft and comfortable!
5 // Mirror mirror on the wall,
I like to include a mirror in bedrooms and throughout my home. I have them all over our house actually! They reflect light and make a smaller space feel larger and brighter, plus I like to have a mirror in the bedroom for trying out outfits and whatnot. In our guest room I have a simple, minimal floor length mirror leaning against the wall.
A few fun extras to think about adding!
- the wifi password on a pretty printable and tucked into a frame
- adding some plants in the room (plants, real or fake, make a room feel bright and fresh and cozy)
- hooks to hang jackets, etc (an accordian hanger is easy to put up and looks pretty too)
- if you’re extra, a small coffee maker like this cute Keurig would be a boujee addition. Tuck in some cute mugs and a few k-pods in a little container and have a mini coffee station set up for your guests.
