5 Easy Ways To Transition To Fall Decor

It’s that time of year where summer is slowly dwindling and mornings are getting crisp! Fall is SO CLOSE guys, at least where I live. The last week of August tends to feel like autumn in the mornings, and come September, when school is starting and the days are getting shorter again, the weather is chilly and brisk. We’ve actually had some summer-like days this week and it’s been amazing. My kiddo’s have started school (which is crazy! Excuse me, how do I have school-aged children now!) It’s such a magical time of year though. I love how cool the mornings are, and all the little ones walking to school feels so nostalgic for me. Pumpkin spice everything becomes available (hel-lo – this pumpkin spice creamer has made my morning coffee so good) and little fall touches start creeping their way into my home.

I can’t help but switch out some of my summery decor for things that are a bit moodier and cozier. My favourite ways to transition to fall decor without going full-blown FALL are by using things I already have and creating a feeling in my home, instead of loading it up with cluttery decor.

^^ Mary Poppins is already feeling the cozy fall vibes here

To be honest, I had a bin full of juicy fall decor items that I picked up last year. Pretty velvet pumpkins and all sorts of cute stuff. I have three fall bins in total actually. One is stuff that I planned on donating, not the good stuff obviously. The second bin is a lot of Halloween decor and costumes I packed away from last year. Lastly, the third bin is the good one, and guess which one I can’t find.

Anyways, fall bin drama aside, I’m going to share 5 ways to transition to fall decor without redecorating the whole house! This kind of decorating is all about feeling and mood. It’s my favourite way to shift towards cozier decor and away from the light, bright summer vibes. A few key pieces are all that is needed!

1. || Switch out your pillow covers.

These are easy to store, a fantastic way to change up the look of your living room, and can be relatively inexpensive. I love to shop here, and here for affordable pillow covers. These pillows are so cozy, same with these and these, and don’t forget places like Michaels and Homesense (HomeGoods if you’re in the states). I have a few cute pillows that I ordered that are a darker velvet that I’m waiting on… but here’s some pretty pillow mixing inspo for the season:

2. || Layer in faux sheepskin rugs.

I use these everywhere in our home. They’re in my kid’s room, on the backs of our dining room chairs as well as the living room chair. I also like these from Ikea because they’re a great, faux rug plus you cannot beat the price tag! They transition well from fall to winter as well. Very hygge.

3. || Use nature.

Fill vases with natural elements like branches or long twigs. If you have long decorative grass in your rock garden or backyard, snip some strands off and pop into a vase. Sunflowers are another gorgeous reminder of fall, as is a leafy eucalyptus (mine our faux). I also like to bring out some terra cotta planters, the pretty rust colour looks so nice with the branches and pampas grass I have around the house. I have them dotted around the house during summer, but when I transition into a little fall decor, I like to group them together for a bit more of an impact.

4. || Switch out the art in your home.

I have a few frames that I change the art out of once or twice a year. My gallery wall along my staircase has a mix of art and family photos. I like to change them with the seasons, updating family photos and the colour scheme.

In our living room, I couldn’t help but add this printable, a fun spooky nod to Halloween without being over the top.

5. || Change the bedding in your room.

My bedding gets switched out with the seasons. I’m extra like that. For fall, I bring out my thicker throws, use flannel pillow cases (so cozy) and this year I’m going darker and moodier with some linen bedding. It’s a heavier fabric, perfect for the colder months. This set is from Magic Linen and it. is. gorgeous. The colour is so beautiful (olive green), I love how it makes our room look. I’m keeping a monochrome look and using the same colour for my sheets as well as my duvet cover. It’s so high quality and the linen bedding gets softer each time I wash it.

^^ Hi Mary Poppins!

I hope these tips inspire you this season. I love the feeling of change and simply switching out some textiles and bringing out darker colours and cozier knits, you can easily transition your decor from summer to fall without spending a ton of money (or any at all).

Have a great Tuesday!
xx Megan
