I absolutely love how this room turned out. Since I moved into this home in November, I’ve tackled my two girl’s bedrooms and was really focusing on the main floor (my living room, kitchen, patio, etc). I really wanted to finish this makeover as a bit of a surprise for my sweet boy, he hasn’t said one thing about the fact that his room has taken much longer than his sister’s bedrooms took to complete. So when he was at his dad’s home a few weeks ago, I got to work from top to bottom redoing his room, it had a fresh coat of paint, wallpaper and a whole mini-makeover to surprise him.
I did this in a pretty affordable way (being single mom and all of that, I’m very cognizant of costs and try to shop my home and reuse decor where I can). I’ll source what I’m able too below for you, but a lot of his room is Ikea and older pieces I’ve had for a few years.
I really loved the idea of making his room fun with pops of colour, but also keeping it a bit moody. He really wanted black paint or something in that realm but didn’t think it was an actual option. Which makes me laugh because my bedroom also has black walls lol. My kiddo and I are a lot alike.
The paint is absolutely stunning,
the brand is Ooh Paint and they’ve quickly become one of my favourite paint brands (I used them in this makeover as well). The coverage is just so lovely and the paint is easy to use, if that makes sense? When I’m rolling it on, it feels very smooth and silky and covers so nicely. They’re also a Canadian brand which I adore!
His room has just one window, and even with the dark walls it feels so bright and cheery. It has a great energy (actually, my whole home does. My family and I have said this since the jump when we moved in, it’s a happy little home!) I applied a lighter, neutral wallpaper on the upper portion of his room. I already had this wallpaper on hand so it worked out perfectly in here! It feels a bit more grown up using the windowpane print wallpaper but the accessories and storage unit keep it fun.
All about the paint I used in this room makeover:
As I mentioned, the brand is Ooh Paints, they have a plethora of beautiful paint colours to choose from (I was really torn between ‘Wild Swim’, on the right, and the one we ultimately selected, which is ‘Blackout’, on the left). You can see how the website swatch vs the actual paint on the walls can differ so much. It’s really important to use actual paint swatches in a space because the lighting and flooring can really alter a paint colour. You can order paint swatches on their website, they have a sticker backing so you can move the swatch around the room and test out the lighting before committing to ordering.
Ooh Paints also has a really hand paint calculator on their website, which takes the guessing game out of how much paint to order for your space, plus they have a fun ‘Colour Whiz’ questionnaire to help select and pair colours for any of your projects. It’s a nice touch!
Why the paint kit is a must for your next paint project!
This is just a little handy tip I have to share, every time I order through Ooh Paints, I add on their paint kit because it makes my life so much easier. Everything you need for your project is included (I’m talking gloves, paint opener, liners, several rollers and brushes, a drop cloth – and it’s all really high quality too. Currently they are 50% off, so I had to share with you guys!
Blackout was the shade my son and I went with because despite being black, it has a warm, cozy tone to it and it’s a really beautiful neutral black. I actually had some paint leftover and used it in another spot in my home (I will share that soon!)
The room reveal!
I love this before and after, truly paint makes the transformation. It really is the most affordable way to update a room! Rearranging his furniture and moving the bed opened up the bedroom as well. To try and modernize the little half wall (I’m thinking easy and with as little DIY/construction as possible) I painted the entire ledge all the way to the bottom to update it. I think it worked out pretty well too? What do you think?
I hope you enjoy! I have quite a few more room makeovers to share as I make my way through my home plus I’ll be sharing more life updates with you guys over here as well. Thanks for reading!
