DIY White Washed Painted Terra Cotta Planters

I have a new diy obsession: white washing my terra cotta planters!  I love how this turned out and I can’t believe how easy it was to do.  You guys need to pick up some terra cotta planters and try this out!  You will love it, I promise.  The best thing is this takes 5 minutes to do (drying time included).

A few weeks ago, I bought some beautiful succulent babies at our local greenhouse.  I knew I wanted them in some pretty pots on our toy bookshelf in the living room, and loved the idea of a soft, white planter.  I bought three terra cotta pots, grabbed some paint (Behr Marquee in Powder White) I had and a paintbrush.

You guys, white washing is so easy.  It gives the most beautiful, soft effect and is basically fool-proof.  I took a tupperware container, added a little of my paint, along with some water, and mixed it well.  You want it to be a runny consistency so that you get a hint of the paint and it’s very opaque.

With the terra cotta, it soaks up paint like crazy, so make sure you brush it on in a smooth, uniform stroke. I painted in long strokes, going around the pot horizontally.  This will dry in about 30 seconds so layer on as much as you need.  Also make sure to paint the inside about an inch.

I added a couple rocks to the bottom to prevent soil from leaking out…

then a few scoops of soil…

and finally, I popped a succulent in and added a bit more soil.

Aren’t these so cute?  I love the soft, white planters and think my little succulents will be happy in their new home.
