I bought this woodsy cabin themed frame from Micheals a few years ago. It was totally an impulse buy, I walked by it, liked the frame but wasn’t the biggest fan of the print and didn’t have anywhere it could really go in our home but I bought it anyways lol. (For the record, I’m trying to not do this anymore and only buy items that I know have a place in my home.) I moved it around a bit, but never really loved it anywhere.
It was a lot of wood and dorky little word quotes hahaha – so it sat downstairs for a long time. I was just about to (finally) donate it to Goodwill last week when I thought I would try a little DIY with it. This can be something done with any art that you have. Don’t be turned away just because something doesn’t have a traditional photo frame backing that is easily taken off!
My frame had screwed in metal brackets to secure the backing, but I was easily able to remove those and take out the board and art.
To make my little watercolour painting, I used a 50¢ poster board from the dollar store (I chose this because it would be big enough for this frame. It worked just as well as actual watercolour paper, I just made sure I wasn’t soaking the paper with water while painting). I trimmed it down to fit and took out some of my kid’s little watercolours. Nothing fancy at all.
With this type of poster board, there is a matte side and a shiny side, I painted on the matte side. I just layered on some different colours and shapes, letting them dry in between in each layer. Then popped it back into the frame followed by the thick backing board and then screwed the brackets back in.
You guys I love this now! Wooden frames are hard to come by in my town, especially large ones like this and I’m so happy I was able to upcycle the frame! Plus this cute eclectic print adds a nice touch to my daughter’s room.
So don’t be alarmed if you have framed art that you don’t love but the actual frame has potential. You can remove almost any sort of backing, whether it is staples, tape, or brackets like this. It’s not as easy as a normal picture frame but can still be done!
