No-Sew DIY Ruffled Lampshade

One of my favourite ways to refresh a room is by adding small, thoughtful details that bring a little personality to a space. Lately, I’ve been loving the look of fabric lampshades, especially ones with a sweet ruffled edge, so I decided to try making my own!

For this project, I partnered with Fabric Wholesale Direct, which carries some beautiful, affordable fabrics that are perfect for home decor DIYs. With just a small amount of fabric and a little hot glue, I created the cutest DIY ruffled lampshades for my wall sconces… and now I want to add them everywhere!

If you’re looking for a quick, beginner-friendly project that instantly adds a touch of cuteness, here’s exactly how I made them.

Why I Love This DIY

These little ruffled shades add instant warmth and charm, think cottage core meets classic cozy home, and even better, they’re completely customizable. You can choose any colour or pattern to match your style.

Not to mention… they cost a fraction of the price of lampshades you would find at a store, plus they’re super customizable. I opted for a soft, slightly crisp fabric that holds its shape while still looking airy and delicate. Fabric Wholesale Direct has so many beautiful options, gingham, solid cottons, florals, and even linen blends if you want a more elevated look. I picked up a few different plaids and ginghams in various colours. I really love this mix and I would love to tackle a fabric garland with these as well! …and potentially a few more fabric lampshades because these are SO quick to pull together and look so darling.

This particular fabric is the Madras Plaid Fabric (style 15991) and it’s a really pretty, almost pink toned fabric. I thought it worked really nicely in here by adding some soft colour.

How to Make a DIY Ruffled Lampshade

1. Measure Your Shade

Start by measuring the height (1.5x)  and bottom circumference (2x) of the lampshade you’re covering.

2. Create the Main Fabric Sleeve

Cut a rectangular piece of fabric based on your measurements. Fold the top and bottom edges inward to create clean hems and glue down with the hot glue in a neat line.

3. Make the Ruffle

To create the ruffle, I added a dab of hot glue every inch or so on one side, pinching to create a small pleat. Then I flipped the fabric around and did the same on the other side. In between each previous pleat, I created another the same way.

4. Attach the Ruffle

I used a dot of hot glue in three separate places (my lamp shades are tiny though, you will use more with a larger shade).

Styling Your New Ruffled Shades

These little shades instantly soften a room and add a subtle romantic feel. I love using them:

  • In a reading nook
  • In bedrooms for cozy evening lighting
  • Along a hallway for charm without visual clutter
  • On a wall sconce above a vanity
  • Even in kitchens for that sweet European cottage vibe or a dining room like mine

They’re such an easy way to make everyday lighting feel special.

A little before and after with a cute lampshade in this space. It definitely adds a touch of whimsy.

I made another one for this wall sconce in my hallway and used this pretty black and white fabric (Gingham Printed 1″ Check Printed Broadcloth in Black)

Final Thoughts

Working with Fabric Wholesale Direct made this project so easy. I love finding high-quality fabric at a great price, especially for DIY decor. These DIY ruffled lampshades turned out even better than I imagined, and they’re the perfect weekend craft if you want to add some handmade charm to your home. It took me about 30 minutes to make 4 little lampshade slip covers.

I’ll be sharing photos and styling ideas on Instagram as well, so stay tuned for more cozy home projects!
