cute kitchen bar stool makeover

I talked about my kitchen bar stools a few months ago, back in December I think… anyway, I scored these three solid oak bar stools on kijiji for $25!  I was so excited because for some reason, these super dated light oak bar stools go for $100 each in stores.  Why? – I have no idea, do people still seek out a light 90’s oak? #apparently

These aren’t exactly our ‘forever stools’, since Kiel prefers a bar stool with a back on it, plus we would eventually like something a little nicer… but the space we currently have in our kitchen won’t allow us to have large, comfy bar stools (first world problems, I get it lol).  So because of that, I didn’t want to spend much on these.

I knew I wanted to paint them with some sort of chalky paint, I mentioned it all in this post here… I loved the look of a darker stained bottom and light painted top, however, our kitchen cabinets and accent tile are all really dark to begin with, so I’m working on adding light to our kitchen space.  I ended up chalk painting the whole stool, lightly distressing it, and then stencilling some numbers on the top.

I love how they turned out actually!  Really cute and a little rustic.  I love a good distress.  I have little kids, so chips and smudges kind of blend in with the rustic vibe distressing them brings hah.  The paint I used was Rustoleum chalk paint.  I used it on my night stands too and wasn’t blown away with it then,  but it went on a little better with the bar stools (still took three coats though).

After painting, I took a sanding square to the edges, softening everything, and then wiped it all down.  The stencil was just a printed out number that I made in PicMonkey (it’s free and awesome for editing pictures), and then I painted it on using some black acrylic paint I had.  I gave the numbers a light sand too, and then finished the whole thing off with some matte wax.

And a before and after…

They’re pretty cute, right?  I actually adore them and they are surprisingly comfortable.  I love that they were only $25 (!!) and turns out, the tops swivel too!
