Room Tour: Big Boy Room Makeover & How To Transition To A Big Boy Bed

Recently we moved my son to a big boy bed.  We didn’t do anything fancy, just removed the crib (we would have liked to have kept the crib as a toddler bed with the bed rail but couldn’t find the added pieces needed!)

To be honest, after making his little floor bed all cozy, I kind of love it more this way! I have been really worried about M falling out of bed and scaring himself.  To help with this transition, Kiel and I have used the Dockatot Grand with M. To say he loves it would be an understatement.  The kid went bananas when I showed him his little bed with the Dockatot on top LOL.  I’m so happy he loves it so much and it’s been a great way to help him feel more comfortable in his ‘new bed’.

A few other tips for helping your little one transition to a big kid bed…

>I made sure to start talking about this with him several weeks ago, gently bringing up what a big kid bed looks like and how his bed would change.  I made sure this was very no pressure.

>Kiel and I also let M take his time.  He told us he wasn’t ready and that his crib made him feel safe and cozy, so we left it at that. To be honest, it was nice having him contained too and not roaming his room when he was supposed to be sleeping haha!

>We started with a big boy pillow and he LOVED it.  It was a great way to use baby steps with this change.  Then when we took his crib apart, we used the Grand Dockatot for him and he was so excited about this little bed, he wanted to show it to everyone! It’s an awesome product (I’ve raved about it since I used the Dockatot Deluxe with Lo when she was a newborn baby, the Deluxe is for babies 0-9 months old and was a lifesaver for us, and the Grand is for babies 9-36 months old).  One of the things that I love, is that how cozy the Dockatot is but it still keeps cool throughout the night, it’s the ideal micro-climate for babies and toddlers, so they don’t get over heated.

>A fun way to help a little one who isn’t that excited about moving to a big kid bed, is to get something special for their new bed.  Like a fun set of sheets or a new cute pillow for them.

Along with a big boy bed, I gave his room a mini makeover…

I did a few simple changes and moved furniture around to give his bedroom a super quick ‘new look’ (I’m super guilty of being that person who changes one thing in a room and suddenly needs to move everything around and completely redo it haha – please tell me you’re like that too!).

I added a few fun pillows to his bed to make it extra cozy. M loves his little fire truck sheet set (from HomeSense and I found his pillow cover there as well), and I added his special quilt that my mother in law made for him, plus the striped comforter from Ikea.

For a little nightstand area, I have this wooden stool I brought up from the laundry room.  It’s nice to have a little spot for him to keep books we read together and it’s the PERFECT height for his floor bed. Sometimes I find him cuddled up in his bed reading with all of his littles stuffies.  Actually the sweetest though.  Speaking of stuffies, anyone who has littles knows stuffies multiply faster than anything!  I keep M’s favourite ones in a little basket in his room so he can easily switch them out.

I have been meaning to paint his dresser, but I haven’t decided on what colour I would like to go with (my natural inclination is to paint it white haha, but I think a little pop of colour would be so fun!).  Since this dresser was in Lo’s room, it had these pretty mercury glass knobs and switching them out has been on my to do list for quite some time now.

I didn’t spend any money on his mini room makeover, we just moved things around and used some decor I already had.  I love his little big boy room and so does my little guy!

Also, while I was quickly snapping these pictures, I had my youngest toddling around the room with me, so just keep in mind that the area behind me while I was taking photos, was basically a mountain of books, stuffed animals and pillows lol.

I can’t even deal with how cute this chickadee is! She had to crawl in and started reading books lol.
